The purpose of this assignment was to create a wiki page in which the individual traits of two characters from the book of Genesis are portrayed through a dialogue that never happened. The two characters that I chose were God and Abraham. The scene in which this fictitious conversation occurs is when God asks Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Through my dialogue, I conveyed the traits for God as authoritative and loyal and Abraham as loyal and fearful. This dialogue, entitled "Trickery of God," provides indirect insight into the cynical and condescending behavior of God towards Abraham.
Background of Painting
The artist of this painting is unknown. In this painting, Abraham is seconds away
from sacrificing his son, Isaac, for God. Abraham is doing so because God command
him to march up a mountain to slay his son. This command of God was to test Abraham's
faithfulness to God. In the end, God sent an angel to stop Abraham from sinking the knife
into his son, for he did not really want Isaac to die. The source of this painting can be found here.
Dialogue
God: Go, now, kill your son so that you and your offspring may have food. Abraham: ...You told me you would multiply my offspring...not make them cannibals. God: EXCUSE ME!? You nimrod. Abraham: SORRY! Sorry. Okay. I'll kill him..God... God: Yeah, that's what I thought. Abraham: Do you really expect my son to just completely comply with me killing him? God: Well, yes, if he's a wimp like you. Abraham: Jesus, dude, calm down. You're scaring me. God: HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HIM?! Abraham: What?! God: Nevermind. Stop stalling me and go kill your son. Abraham: This is going to be hard. I love my son...How could you ask me to do this? External site with picture. God: Because your love for me shall be greater. Abraham: People only do what you say because they're afraid you'll hurt them if they disobey. Your commands don't always make sense in the current context. God: You're really still talking, aren't you? Abraham: Alright, I'll do it. Not for you, but for the fear that you instill in people, including me. I guess there's a reason why you're asking me to do this, so that's why I'll do it. I'll go grab my son, which won't be easy. God: If you say one more word, I will smite you. Abraham: Okay bye.
Abraham brings Isaac up the mountain...
Abraham: God, I really don't want to do this... God: You must. Abraham: Why must I? God: Are you questioning me? Abraham: Do you always answer questions with questions? God: Excuse me? Abraham: Wow. God: SILENCE! I swear to myself if you don't kill Isaac I'll kill you both. Abraham: Okay, okay. I'll do it.
Abraham raises the knife...
God's Angel: STOP!!! Abraham: WOW. What now?! God's Angel: God gave you this command as a test of your loyalty. You don't have to kill him! Abraham: ....I'm sure there was a better alternative... God: No, Abraham, there wasn't. I had to do this because it is of extreme intensity to kill somebody, and I wanted to see if you had it in you to obey me no matter what. Abraham: ...okay. Isaac: So..uh..can we go home now? Abraham: Shut up, Isaac. God: Yes, you may leave. I won't do this again, by the way. Abraham: Thanks God. I'm glad you won't make me kill somebody again. (Sarcastic) God: Don't sass me. I am your Lord, you shall respect me. Abraham: Or...do everything you say out of complete and utter fear. Close enough. God: Once again, you're sassing . Abraham: GOD! Okay! I get it. We're going home now. God: ...Wait, now you have to kill Sarah too. Abraham: You're joking right? God: ....Yes. Abraham: Good one.
Character Analysis
God: Although God is harshly authoritative, he is loyal in his promises with Abraham. In the image, God cannot be seen, although it seems that he is the "sky." God's loyalty to Abraham is apparent because momentarily after this image was "captured," God sent his angel to stop Abraham from killing Isaac. This proves the point perfectly because it shows that although God's command was violent/destructive, he was loyal to Abraham.
Abraham: Abraham's fearfulness of God drives him to be loyal to all people. The picture that was chosen shows how Abraham is finalizing his action of executing his son by God's will. This picture depicts Abraham's characteristics of fearfulness leading to loyalty. Abraham's fearful expression is a result of Abraham's loyalty to God by executing his son. No matter what command Abraham is told, he will obey it out of fear of God.
Script Analysis
Johnny wanted to portray God as a mean and unreasonable ruler of the people. Johnny portrayed God as these traits by making Abraham commit an ignoble action to test his faithfulness to God. An example of Johnny showing God's traits through the dialogue is, "If you say one more word, I will smite you." Through this quote, and others alike, God is portrayed as a cynical dictator.
